Monitoring earthquakes: the National Seismic Network

A strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred early in the morning on 24 August 2016 at 03:36 (Italy’s time) in Central Italy causing a number of casualties. The epicentre is 4 km deep close to Accumoli, a small town near Rieti, in the Lazio region, and all municipalities within twenty kilometres from the epicentre have been hit heavily, including the provinces of Perugia, Ascoli Piceno, L’Aquila and Teramo. After the 03:36 earthquake, there have two additional earthquakes of magnitude 5.1 and 5.4 at 04:32 and 04:33, respectively.
