Research projects of national interest
Name of funding source
Projects of national interest (Progetti di Ricerca di Interesse Nazionale - PRIN)
With the changes to legislation on the funding of “projects of national interest”, the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) has introduced a new mechanism for the allocation of funds based on co-funding, group research work and peer evaluation. The main objective, at least for the next years, is the reinforcement of the national scientific foundations with a view to securing a more effective participation in the European initiatives related to the Framework Programmes. Yearly and with an ad-hoc decree, the MIUR announces a call for proposals for funding, on a three-year basis, research projects of national interest (PRIN).
The objectives of the PRIN are:
- To offer financial assistance to research projects freely proposed by universities
- To promote and cultivate systemic actions, encouraging interaction among the various actors in the national public research system, and between the latter and any other national or international (public or private) research bodies
Activities eligible for funding
Proposals may be freely and independently submitted. There is no obligation on the topics they address or any requirement to reflect topics defined at central level.
All Italian universities and university bodies, state-run or otherwise, including secondary schools subject to special regulations and those public research bodies operating under the MIUR supervision.
The fund is managed by the MIUR, which acts in conjunction with individual universities in the selection procedure for the proposals received.
