The CLOSER project for the European Researchers’ Night in Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta
A night of experiments, shows and events: with the “CLOSER - Coltiviamo insieme la Ricerca” project, Alessandria, Asti, Biella, Cuneo, Turin, Verbania and Aosta are ready to host thousands of researchers and citizens of all ages on the European Researchers’ Night which will take place on Friday 30 September 2016. The initiative is promoted and co-funded by the European Commission in the context of the European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020.
The objective of the European Researchers’ Night, this year in its eleventh edition, which takes place simultaneously in over 200 European cities, is to bring the general public closer to the world of research, in particular to researchers, showing that the “researcher is a normal person that does exceptional things” in order to increase citizens’ awareness of the importance of research for the cultural, social and economic development of society.
The ten previous editions of the European Researchers’ Night confirm the success of this event across Europe and Italy has always responded very enthusiastically to the initiative promoted by the European Commission. The 2016 edition of the European Researchers’ Night in Italy involves 6 National Projects and 52 cities with numerous events and initiatives.
Piedmont, the Italian region with the highest number of participants in all previous editions, this year has passed the European selection together with Valle d’Aosta with the two-year CLOSER - Cementing Links between Science&society toward Engagement and Responsibility project. The project fully embraces the values promoted by Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) – the most important cross-cutting issue in Horizon 2020.
RRI is a new paradigm linking science and society, offering the opportunity to cultivate a common interest between researchers and a variety of social actors engaged in a dialogue on the impact of science in contemporary society to design together a sustainable future that is ethically acceptable and socially desirable.
For this reason, the European Researchers’ Night in Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta involves universities, research centres and enterprises willing to strengthen the relationship between the territory and the world of research and innovation.
The CLOSER Project is organized by University of Turin, Polytechnic University of Turin, University of Eastern Piedmont, University of Gastronomic Sciences, Associazione CentroScienza Onlus and Creativa-impresa di comunicazione. The project is coordinated by Agorà Scienza and is part of System Science Piedmont.
