PRISMI project, Sapienza supporting Mediterranean islands in the transition to energy independence

The European PRISMI (Promoting RES Integration for Smart Mediterranean Islands) project, funded by the European Community under the “Interreg Med 2014-2020” Programme, aims at supporting the transition of Mediterranean islands to energy independence by giving local authorities the opportunity to assess the potential of the renewable energy sources available and supporting them in planning their transition from an energy-dependent economy to increasingly self-sufficient models.

PRISMI, having a duration of 18 months, aims to develop an implementation strategy for assessing and mapping local potential of renewable sources and for developing energy scenarios and techno-economic feasibility studies, offering local authorities the opportunity to join a network to which the results of the projects will be reported.

Last December, the Sapienza University of Rome hosted the PRISMI project kick-off meeting that includes five areas characterized by different environmental, economic, energy and landscape features: the island of Favignana (Italy), the island of Korčula (Croatia), the island of Tilos (Greece), the Akamas peninsula (Cyprus) and the island of Gozo (Malta).

The project is conducted by the Sapienza University of Rome and involves 6 other European partners: Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving, Piraeus University of Applied Sciences (Greece), University of Zagreb (Croatia), Cyprus Energy Agency (Cyprus), Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency, and the Municipality of Favignana (Italy).

The Network that will be created during the project will guarantee free membership to all institutions, administrations and organizations, both public and private, interested in the results and activities of the project, enabling a real exchange of know-how aimed at the implementation of innovative and sustainable strategies and methods and at raising awareness among the local communities.

Part of the resources will support the participation of the institutions belonging to the network in the “Regional engagement workshops”, designed to present the results of the project and the useful tools for the diffusion of renewable energy sources in the Mediterranean islands.
