Two POLIMI researchers awarded new European funds
Dario Polli and Manuela Raimondi, Professors at Politecnico di Milano, have received two new Proof of Concept - PoC grants from ERC, which are awarded to researchers who have already received an ERC grant and want to explore the commercial potential of basic research on the market.
Dario Polli is head of the Fluo project, which will bring to market an innovative device for measuring fluorescence on a large number of samples. Fluorescence is today widely used as an analysis tool in an increasingly wide variety of fields.
The device is at least ten times smaller and faster than the bulky and expensive spectrofluorometers currently on the market, and at least half the price. The ERC PoC will be used to bring this discovery to market through a start-up company based in Milan.
Manuela Raimondi is responsible for the MOAB (Miniaturized Optically Accessible perfusion Bioreactor) project consisting of an innovative modular bioreactor for the culture of three-dimensional micro-tissues, designed to overcome the limitations of devices already on the market, which are not able to conduct realistic tests of new drugs.
This study integrates a new 3D nano-pattern substrate for stem cell culture in a miniaturized optically accessible bioreactor, enabling the 3D culture of micro-organoids. The objective of this PoC is to bring MOAB to market to take advantage of the patent and know-how obtained.
Both inventions are covered by Italian patents.
The two researchers received their ERC Consolidator Grants in 2014, a first PoC in 2016 and a second PoC in 2018. They have jointly launched the transdisciplinary initiative “Imaging Technologies for Life Sciences” for research in the field of life sciences.
