Space, launch of first satellite of Italo-Argentine SIASGE system announced

The launch of the first satellite of the Italo-Argentine SIASGE system for the management of environmental emergency and economic development is approaching.

The launch will take place at the beginning of autumn from the U.S. station of Vandenberg with Falcon 9 carrier of the Space X company: the announcement was given by the President of Argentina Mauricio Macrì.

The launch of the second satellite will follow in 2019.

The launch of the Italo-Argentine system stems from the intention to develop an integrated and interoperable system for the management and prevention of natural and environmental disasters, by using radar technology

SIASGE aims at integrating data and applications from two satellite constellations, bringing together the X band of the Italian COSMO-SkyMed system of the Italian Space Agency-ASI and the L band of the Argentine SAOCOM system.

This is an important technological challenge, especially in terms of use of data and large amount of satellite applications to be used in Italy, Europe, Argentina, Latin America and in the rest of the world. A joint study by ASI and Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales-CONAE has shown that the planned integration which uses X, L and X+L bands achieves approximately 78% of the possible space applications.

Under this cooperation, ASI is contributing to the development of the Argentine satellites, providing data from the COSMO-SkyMed system and making the Matera station available, obtaining in return the possibility to use data from the SAOCOM system and the Cordoba station in Argentina, as well as an exclusive use of SAOCOM data on specific geographic areas.
