PolySense, interuniversity public-private sensoristics and optics lab to open in Bari
The Interuniversity Department of Physics “Michelangelo Merlin” of the Polytechnic University of Bari has opened a public-private lab focused on research in sensoristics and optics. “PolySense” – this is the name of the new lab – was set up thanks to a ten-year collaboration agreement between the University and the American company Thorlabs Inc, world leader in opto-mechanics and photonics, with research and manufacturing facilities also in Canada, Japan, China, Brazil, United Kingdom, Germany, France and Sweden.
Outpost of Thorlabs Inc in Europe, the new lab – in which the company will invest about 2 million euro in the next 10 years – will be set up based on the model of that opened at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston and will open new job perspectives for young researchers, PhD students, University students of the Polytechnic University of Bari, who will work with the expert staff of the research company on optical sensors for gas detection to be used for applications in the fields of biomedics, environment, security and processes of industrial control.
“The new public-private PolySense lab – said Rector Eugenio Di Sciascio – strengthens the relationship of Polytechnic University with high-profile companies, and joins those previously carried out with Bosch in automotive, Openwork in information technology and many others, based on the model proven to be successful of the first experiment, started a few years ago with Avio Aero of General Electric, called Energy Factory Bari”.
