Beyond, this is the name of Luca Parmitano’s second mission

Beyond is the name of Luca Parmitano’s second space mission that will take the Italian astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) in July 2019 as part of Expedition 60/61, together with astronauts Andrew Morgan of NASA and Alexander Skvortsov of Roscosmos.

The mission’s name, logo and patch were presented at an event held at the ESRIN centre of the European Space Agency in Frascati. Luca Parmitano has taken part in the Volare mission, the first long-duration mission of the Italian Space Agency, and he is the first Italian astronaut to have conducted extravehicular space activities.

With the Beyond mission, Parmitano will also be the first Italian astronaut to command the ISS and will take over as commander in the second half of his mission. He will also be the third European Space Agency’s astronaut to command the ISS during its 18 years of operation.

The mission will see the crew carry out more than 50 experiments and test new technologies aimed at protecting astronauts in view of long-duration missions to deep space and Mars.
