SPRING was initiated by Federchimica, which represents the entire Italian chemical industry and its vocation to sustainability, and three companies that have distinguished themselves in the development of highly innovative technologies and processes and products from renewable sources, Biochemtex, Novamont and Versalis.
The members of the Cluster, over 100, are all realities operating in different ways in the field of bioeconomy, representing the entire Italian value-chain of green chemistry, from agriculture to research in the field of chemistry, from renewable sources and industrial biotechnologies, to processing of materials and bioproducts, to industrial transformation and finally to the disposal phase. This ensures a multi-sectoral approach which is fundamental for the development of the sector.
The Cluster has the objective of triggering the growth and development of bio-based industries in Italy, through a holistic approach to innovation, aimed at revitalising Italian chemistry in the name of environmental, social and economic sustainability, and to stimulate research and investments in new technologies, in constant dialogue with local players.
Lines of development
- Renewable resources as raw materials, determination of the most appropriate local species (scraps or dedicated crops) to use in the biorefinery processes; identification and use of marginal and/or contaminated lands; promotion of the cascade use of biomass and the construction of new agro-industrial value chains;
- Biorefineries: creation of integrated third-generation biorefineries in the local areas to obtain high value-added products such as biochemicals and biomaterials; development and optimization of innovative technologies and efficient processes through activities of Research & Development and scale-up aimed to foster the construction of pilot plants and demonstrator models; reconversion of decommissioned industrial areas;
- Bio-based products: development and promotion of new bio-based products (partially or totally obtained from renewable resources), with low environmental impact and benefits from the social and economic point of view;
- Support framework to R&D activities: actions aimed to support R&D activities in order to contribute to the growth of investments in innovative technologies and in pilot plants and to stimulate bioeconomy at a national and regional level.
