Unione Matematica Italiana

The Italian Mathematical Union (UMI) is a non-profit organization whose activity is devoted to follow, promote and popularize the development of mathematical sciences and their applications, and to disseminate their results. Presently, UMI has about 2,000 members, whose participation strengthens the presence of mathematics – as a scientific and research discipline – at a national and international level. UMI has strong ties with the European Mathematical Society (EMS), which plays the same role as UMI at a continental level: on the web site of UMI it is possible to subscribe, at the same time, to both societies.

UMI was founded in 1922 and it is based at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Bologna (Italy). The Union fosters the development of all cultural aspects of mathematics, in particular the scientific research, with the organization of international congresses which, starting form 1951, take place every four years.

UMI also publishes various journals and book series:

Periodical publications

  • Bollettino dell'Unione Matematica Italiana
  • La Matematica nella Società e nella Cultura - Rivista dell'UMI (members only)
  • Notiziario della Unione Matematica Italiana (members only)

Proceedings of UMI congresses

With the contribution of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities 'and in collaboration with the Italian Society of Applied and Industrial mathematics (SIMAI), UMI is carrying on the project of the Italian Mathematical Digital Library, whose objective is digitalization and free online distribution of the Italian mathematical journals collaborating with the initiative.

In order to encourage high level research in mathematics, UMI awards various prizes, among which we mention:
