International Day for Biological Diversity
22 May 2018 is the International Day for Biological Diversity, the day dedicated to the defense and protection of biodiversity, proclaimed in 2000 by the General Assembly of the United Nations to celebrate the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Biodiversity of a given environment refers to the variety of living organisms found there, in their different forms, being currently threatened by the progressive increase in polluting factors and habitat reduction. It can be described in terms of genes, species or ecosystems. Genetic resources are considered as the crucial component of biodiversity within a single species.
Sustainable development also depends on the understanding, protection and preservation of the innumerable interactive ecosystems of the planet.
