Cities on Volcanoes
When: 09/02/2018 - 09/07/2018
The relationship between men and volcanoes is the focus of the tenth edition of the Cities and Volcanoes Conference that will take place 2-7 September 2018 at Mostra d’Oltremare in Naples.
The Conference is promoted by the Cities and Volcanoes Commission that, within the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI), aims to establish a link between the volcanology community and those who plan and manage emergencies, through the exchange of ideas and experience between cities on volcanoes, promoting multidisciplinary research and collaboration between experts in Earth Sciences and Social Sciences and local administrators.
The theme of the tenth edition, Millennia of Stratification between Human Life and Volcanoes: strategies for coexistence, focuses on the inherent resilience of human societies to volcanic risk, in a millenary history of coexistence with volcanoes showing that they represent a resource, rather than a problem.
IAVCEI, which promotes the event, is one of the eight associations of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) of which the Italian National Research Council (CNR) is a member. The National CNR-IUGG Commission is involved in the initiative.
The event is organized by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in collaboration with Italian Association of Volcanology (AIV), Civil Protection Department (DPC), Vesuvius National Park, Regione Campania, Comune di Napoli, and the University of Naples ‘Federico II’ - Department of Earth Sciences, Environment and Resources.
